چکیده

A meteor radar has been used to measure the horizontal winds in the equatorial mesosphere and lower thermosphere over Ascension Island (8.0 • S, 14.4 • W). A 5-year data set covering the interval 2001–2005 over the height range 78–100 km is considered. The lunar M 2 tide is clearly evident in the data and reaches amplitudes as large as 11 ms −1 in the meridional component and 6 ms −1 in the zonal component. These are the first observations of the lunar tide made over the equatorial Atlantic sector. Comparisons of the observed seasonal behaviour with the model of Vial and Forbes (1994) reveals good agreement, but the observed amplitudes are generally larger and there is a systematic phase difference of ∼ 2 h with the observed phases lagging the model. Comparisons with observations made at other equatorial sites suggest the presence of non-migrating lunar M 2 tides and/or significant inter-annual variability.

Observations of lunar tides in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere at Arctic and middle latitudes

Meteor radars have been used to measure the horizontal winds in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere over Castle Eaton (52 N) in the UK and over Esrange (68 N) in Arctic Sweden. We consider a 16-year data set covering the interval 1988–2004 for the UK and a 6-year data set covering the interval 1999–2005 for the Arctic. The signature of the 12.42-h (M2) lunar tide has been identified at both l...

Winds and tides in the mid-latitude Southern Hemisphere upper mesosphere recorded with the Falkland Islands SuperDARN radar

Meteor wind data from the first year of operation of the Falkland Islands SuperDARN radar (52 S, 59 W) are used to characterize the atmospheric tides and background winds in the upper mesosphere above the South Atlantic. Strong (>40 m s−1) semidiurnal tides are observed in the winter time and large amplitude (>60 m s−1) bursts of quasi two-day wave activity are seen in January 2011. Data are in...

Variability of mesospheric diurnal tides and tropospheric diurnal heating during 1997–1998

[1] This study focuses on interannual variations of diurnal tropospheric heating and the response in the mesosphere observed by radars and predicted by a model. The work is prompted by reports of interannual variability in amplitudes of tidal variables at low latitudes. Diurnal tides observed at Hawaii and Christmas Island exhibit a pronounced ‘‘spike’’ in amplitude from late 1997 to early 1998...

Nonmigrating semidiurnal tide over the Arctic determined from TIMED Doppler Interferometer wind observations

[1] The TIMED Doppler Interferometer (TIDI) on the NASA Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite has been measuring horizontal winds in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) since 2002. Because of the high inclination of the TIMED orbit, TIDI measures the horizontal winds from pole to pole every orbit. This paper presents the first assessment of the spa...
